Becoming a Minimalist as a First Time Mom

Seeking Balance in the Midst of Change

As the last week of summer wraps up, I find myself getting geared up for autumn and feeling peace as summer is over. Change is happening and I couldn’t be happier.

I love autumn. I could go on about it for hours, but a crisp, cool, foggy morning with my hot coffee is a quiet moment I will always cherish.

This week hasn’t afforded me many quiet moments, so unfortunately I have missed 3 days of posting, but I have been able to accomplish numerous tasks and keep to my basic habits.

I haven’t entered in today’s tasks, but I have seen what the absolute bare minimum is that needs to be accomplish irregardless of what happens in a day. The other night I surprised myself as yet again I had a sink full of dirty dishes. I thought, “what can I get away with doing tonight and still feel good tomorrow?”

I decided to just rinse and stack the dirty dishes. Then I decided to just unload the dishwasher. By then I decided what’s 2 minutes more, I might as well load. About 10 minutes later all my dishes were done and my counters were tidied up.

Within 30 days I have completely changed my habit and I am ecstatic. I used to just do the dishes in the morning and not care about the mess at night. Now my mornings have that quiet free time before my son wakes up that I can sit back and drink my coffee and catch up on reading or on writing this blog.

The big change that is happening to me this week is I am going to quit teaching piano lessons for now. I have chosen to focus on finishing my college education and get my certification in piano. Also, I want to focus on my family and my son right now. While I probably could continue teaching, I feel I would be way more peaceful and accomplish my goals more efficiently if I keep to just a few important things instead of trying to accomplish everything and failing at half of them.

I have found balance during this season of change and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for my little family this autumn.

Until tomorrow,

Mom Minimal
